Alberta Purchasing Connection registration
The Alberta Purchasing Connection (APC) is the Government of Alberta's electronic tendering site. Anyone can browse postings, but you need a registered supplier account to download bid documents, express interest, and get updates — here is exactly how registration works, what it costs, and where the traps are.
What the Alberta Purchasing Connection is
The Alberta Purchasing Connection (APC) is the Government of Alberta's electronic tendering site, at purchasing.alberta.ca. Anyone can browse public postings without an account — but registration on APC is mandatory for suppliers who want to actively participate in competitive bidding for Government of Alberta opportunities. The platform was modernized recently, and APC's support pages are explicit that sign-in credentials from the previous version of the system no longer work: vendors returning to Alberta bidding must self-register a new supplier account rather than reuse an old purchasingconnection.ab.ca login. Alongside the portal, Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction publishes a Quick Reference Guide for Suppliers (June 2025) covering the whole GoA bidding process.
What an APC supplier account unlocks
Alberta.ca publishes a registered-vs-non-registered table: both can view public postings, but only registered suppliers can express interest in opportunities, download bid documents, and receive updates on them. A supplier account also unlocks bookmarking postings for fast future access, saving and applying custom filter sets to the Find Opportunities & Notices list, and New Posting Notifications — a setting that emails registered suppliers daily updates on the latest procurement opportunities. Two account rules catch new vendors: your email address can be used for a Supplier account OR a Buyer account, but not both, and each Supplier account can only be linked to one Supplier Business, so anyone representing multiple businesses creates a separate account for each.
How to register on APC, step by step
APC's official Help Centre how-to guide (manuals.alberta.ca/apc-help-centre) breaks registration into four steps. Step 1 — from the APC home page, select Suppliers in the top navigation bar, then Create an Account. Step 2 — enter your individual work email, confirm with the Nature of Email Account checkbox that it is not a shared inbox, run Check Email Availability, then read and accept the Terms of Use. Step 3 — complete the Individual Profile (the email is locked to the account once created), set a password meeting the stated requirements, then select or add your Supplier Business: search by full legal or operating name, match on the unique Business ID if the business already exists in APC, and add your business if no match is found. When you associate with an existing business, a request goes to its Business Admin for approval; if you add a new business, you become its Business Admin, responsible for approving other users and maintaining the profile. Step 4 — activate your account from the email APC sends, sign in, and land on the Find Opportunities & Notices page. Before creating the account you must also tick the Authorization Acknowledgement confirming you are authorized to represent the business. Eligibility, 1GX, and where to get help
Alberta.ca's eligibility rules: businesses must be legally registered in Alberta or in a jurisdiction recognized under applicable trade agreements, and must comply with the tax, insurance and regulatory requirements listed on each solicitation — some opportunities require proof of certifications such as Workers' Compensation Board coverage or safety clearance. Organizations owned by other levels of government, or funded through regular appropriations of other governments, are not eligible for GoA business, though some subsidized charitable or non-profit community-service organizations can compete. For help: the APC Help Centre has illustrated how-to guides and FAQs; account and technical issues go through the APC support request form, monitored Monday to Friday 8:15 am to 4:30 pm Alberta time (APC displays all times in ABT); GoA procurement questions split by goods — IT goods to [email protected], non-IT goods to [email protected] — with supplier outreach at [email protected]; and 1GX Supplier Help is at 780-643-0150 or [email protected]. To see what is actually open today, our Alberta Purchasing Connection portal page tracks live Alberta opportunities.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Alberta Purchasing Connection free for suppliers?
Yes for suppliers: Alberta.ca's registration guidance and the APC supplier pages publish no supplier fee for registering or bidding, and the account self-registration flow has no payment step — browsing public postings does not even require an account. Costs appear at the platform level elsewhere in Canada — per-solicitation fees on MERX or subscriptions and per-bid charges on Biddingo — so Alberta is one of the cheaper provinces to enter. One related cost trap: if an opportunity notice links to the Government of Alberta's 1GX system, you must register (at no cost) in SAP Ariba Discovery to view and download the full solicitation documents.
How do I register as an APC supplier?
Registration is self-serve in four steps on the Create an APC Supplier Account page: (1) start from the APC home page at purchasing.alberta.ca and open Suppliers in the top navigation, then Create an Account; (2) enter your individual work email — confirm it is not a shared inbox, check email availability, and accept the Terms of Use; (3) complete the Individual Profile, set a password, then search for your business and associate your account with it — APC checks for duplicate businesses, matches on the unique Business ID where one exists, and otherwise lets you add your business; (4) acknowledge you are authorized to represent the business and create the account. You activate the account from an email link, and if you associated with an existing business, a request goes to its Business Admin for approval. Alberta.ca's Quick Reference Guide for Suppliers (June 2025) walks through the same flow with screenshots.
Why can't I download tender documents on APC?
Viewing postings is open to everyone, but downloading bid documents, expressing interest, bookmarking and receiving updates are registered-supplier features — if those controls are greyed out, you are not signed in to a supplier account. Two other common causes: your email is tied to a Buyer account rather than a Supplier account (APC allows one type per email address), or the notice links to 1GX, in which case the documents live behind a free SAP Ariba Discovery registration instead. Once signed in, use Express Interest on every opportunity you might bid — that is how APC sends you addenda and status updates, and the New Posting Notifications setting emails you daily when new opportunities match.
Does every Alberta buyer post on APC?
Alberta's Broader Public Sector does not. Government of Alberta departments post on APC and suppliers must be registered to compete for GoA competitive bids, but MASH-sector buyers — municipalities, school divisions, universities, health organizations — choose their own channels, and many Canadian buyers use platforms like bids&tenders or Biddingo rather than the provincial system. Our Canadian tender sites list maps every portal and platform, and our SaskTenders registration guide covers the neighbouring prairie system.
